Cleanliness Crisis in Lahore: Addressing Civic and Governmental Responsibilities:
Lahore is a major city of Pakistan, located in the continent of Asia. The city is famous for its lush gardens, prestigious colleges, and rich Mughal architecture. Its beautiful monuments attract a large number of tourists, especially foreigners. However, as captivating as these landmarks are, they are marred by the unfortunate sight of wrappers littering the streets, dirty footpaths, and roads flooded with rainwater due to an overflowing sewer system. This not only blocks roads and streets but also gives a poor impression to visitors.
The real issue lies in the choked gutters, blocked by rubbish stuck in the sewage pipelines. The situation raises an important question: what are we doing about this, and where is the department responsible for maintaining cleanliness in Lahore?
Lack of Civic Sense and Poor Departmental Performance:
Lahore’s large population suffers from a lack of civic sense. Many citizens are illiterate when it comes to understanding their responsibilities toward the city’s cleanliness. Furthermore, the department responsible for managing the cleanliness of the city fails to create public awareness. Without a well-educated and informed public, how can we expect to clean the entire city? Even if the department does its job, the public must also fulfill its duties.
The City in Chaos After Rain:
After it rains, muddy water collects on the streets and roads, leaving the city looking like dirty laundry. While the important streets and main roads remain squeaky clean, other roads and areas give off the worst possible impression to the people, especially tourists. It is not wrong to say that many of Lahore’s streets and roads are as filthy as a pigsty.
Solutions to Lahore’s Cleanliness Problems:
These are the problems we face, but the more important question is: how can we tackle them? The main solutions to the issues mentioned above are outlined below:
1. Public Awareness
Educating the public about their civic responsibilities is essential to keeping the city clean.
2. Implementation of Heavy Fines
Fines should be imposed on individuals and businesses that litter or violate cleanliness regulations.
3. Strict Enforcement of Rules
Authorities need to enforce cleanliness laws strictly, ensuring no one can violate the rules without consequences.
4. Adopt International Cleanliness Systems
Lahore should adopt the cleanliness systems of well-developed countries like China, America, and England, where waste management is highly efficient.
5. Install Bins and Recycling Containers
Installing waste bins and recycling containers throughout the city and ensuring their proper use will encourage responsible waste disposal.
6. Youth Awareness in Educational Institutions
Schools, colleges, and universities should hold sessions on the importance of cleanliness and strictly advise students to use bins and avoid littering.
A Call to Policymakers:
It is a heartfelt request to the policymakers of Lahore to fulfill their duties and remain true to their responsibilities. Only through collective action, both by the public and the authorities, can Lahore regain its cleanliness and continue to thrive as a city admired by all.
